Sugary Sweet View of Sedona

by Crystal Sincoff

Why hadn’t I done this hike before? I’ve lived here all of these years and never hiked Sugerloaf. This hike is smack dab in the middle of Sedona. If you aren’t sure where it is the trail head could be pretty easy to overlook.  It’s located in a residential neighborhood.  I drove past the entrance the first time and had to turn around in someone’s driveway.

The prickly pear cactus were lovely along the way up. There were flowers in baby pink, fuchsia and golden yellow, in all different stages of bloom. The trail was clearly marked. There was the Teacup Loop train which I started out on. This would loop around the formation that is Sugarloaf, which I would guess is named for the way this hill rises out of the ground, shaped roughly like a loaf of bread. The offshoot of this trail, leads to the summit.

The hike climbs elevation very gradually and I would call it easy hike. What is awesome about it is that you get views of Chimney Rock and Coffee Pot rocks on the way up. Then with a little climbing, you reach the summit which gives you a 360 of all of Sedona. I normally send our guests to the Airport Vortex hike to take in Sedona at sunset, but I bet from Sugarloaf it is just as stunning. You could see all of Sedona spread out before you.

On my way down, I did somehow get off the trail, and was kind-of trail blazing, but it was easy enough to hook back up on it again. It was a happy little diversion, because I found some beautiful wildflowers.

Sedona Wildflowers

by Crystal Sincoff

I just saw that the Red Rock Ranger station is having a local wildflower presentation on Saturday, May 14th at 11am. That sounds really fun! I have been seeing a lot of wildflowers lately. They are popping up along the highways and there were a lot on both the West Fork and Chavez Ranch hikes. Phyliss Lindberg who is an area expert will give a free hour long presentation on both Sedona and Verde Valley wildflowers. Hope to see you there!

A Walk in the Green of Sedona

By Crystal Sincoff

A friend and I found ourselves down by the Chavez Ranch swimming area yesterday. I had found this trail head by accident a few years ago. I like to go on drives with no real destination in mind and was taking the scenic ride down Upper Red Rock Loop road and instead of heading to Crescent Moon Ranch, I decided to head left instead of right, and take the dirt road less traveled by, with no real idea what I would find on the other side. Once to the top of the hill there are some amazing views of Courthouse Butte and Cathedral Rock, along with the local homesteads in the valley. You make a left at the hilltop and go down a winding narrow road, that after about ten minutes takes you to the Chavez Ranch trail head.chavez ranch sedona arizona sedona real inn and suites A Walk in the Green of Sedona

This is an easy hike to a local swimming hole. It may not even be considered a hike, as hiking implies a gaining of elevation and some physical effort, so I could call it a scenic walk. What is great about this trail is that not many people seem to know about it. Usually, I take this hike in the fall. Because it runs along oak creek there a lot of leafy trees so the colors are amazing. It was great to find out in the Spring it is just as lovely.

There was only one other car there when we parked, and we stepped out of the vehicle to the distant sound of guitar music. There was a musician who was quite good sitting down by the creek strumming. We walked back beneath the trees along the water and crossed over the creek to a field of more trees and pleasantly overgrown vegetation. There were so many new green leaves and plants it hardly felt like we were in Arizona. It might be good to carry a walking stick with you if you are not really sure footed. My friend is like a goat and he hops across the water with no trouble at all. I, on the other hand, like the assurance of something in my hands for balance.

Since I was there in the fall, another tree hand fallen across the path but it was easy to climb over. There are actually several very large trees that have fallen that you walk past or can climb upon. My friend pointed out that it was amazing how something so old and broken could still have life. The branches stretched up to toward the sun, leaves growing from them still. Spring flowers dotted our path. Purple, orange, and red.

The trail opens to a swimming hole framed by red rock. The water was smooth. The green leaves of the trees, and the red of the rocks reflected back at us. The view was slightly different than it is in the fall. If you look back down the creek in the direction in which you have walked you could see all of the green of the trees and the water running over the rocks. In the fall the trees are more bare so you get more of a red rock view. If you want, there is an area where you can climb the rocks to take in more of this view above the trees. I didn’t climb up on this outing, but I have done so before.

My friend and I took a seat at the edge of the creek and put our feet in the water. It was refreshing with the sun on us and I wished I had brought a bathing suit. It hadn’t thought it was quite swimming weather yet, but I think it could have been fun. By the time we walked back to our car the parking lot was full of cars. Most people in bathing suits and carrying coolers. It was nice to hear that weekend laughter and chatter. Made me wish I didn’t have to head into work later in the day.

Hiking is one of my favorite activities in Sedona, and as promised I have pictures from my favorite hike, West Fork, also known as Call of the Canyon. I hike this trail at least half a dozen times a year and whenever I have family or friends visiting from out of town, this is the first hike I like to take them on. This is an all season hike. Great this time of year because of the wild flowers and the budding trees. A perfect summer hike because of the shade of the pines and the water, and a beautiful fall hike because of the changing leaf color. Just about everyone can enjoy this trail. It isn’t difficult. There is no real elevation gain. The most difficult part would be navigating the creek. I recommend taking hiking sticks to help with balance, or wearing a good pair of hiking shoes made for getting your feet wet.

It was a lovely mid-70s this past week, great hiking weather. The parking lot was pretty full when we got there, but a great thing about this trail is it never seems crowded. There is a $9 entrance fee per vehicle for parking.

At the start of this hike you will cross a bridge that leads to an orchard, the ground covered with ferns. Ruins from an old homestead will lie in front of you. This is a lot of fun to explore. All that remains of the old brick house are the crumbling bricks of four hearths, and a couple of supporting walls. A cool round window is in the middle of one that is fun to take pictures through. This has been overgrown with vegetation. There is a trail that leads down to the creek here, but it is not the trial head. The remains of a stone chicken coop and a man-made cave, which I assume was once cold storage for this homestead still remain on this site.

The reason this is my favorite hike in the area is the natural beauty that makes up the trail. Erosion has formed huge curves in the side of the rocks that line the trail, and the clear water of the creek reflects the shades of red and orange in the water. The trail cris-crosses the creek so its fun to balance on the rocks and hop your way across. Wild flowers are starting to bloom this time of year and there were yellow and purple flowers scattered amongst the pine trees. A couple of trees had fallen across the trail in the winter months and we had to scramble over them. I love the sound of the leaves blowing in the trees and the creek. It is so peaceful.
