Mescal Moutain is a mesa in the Long Canyon area of Secret Mt. Wilderness. “Mescal” refers to the agave or “century plant.” The hike leads past “Grandma’s Cave,” often called “Birthing Cave,” and Native ruins before skirting the rock wall base of Mescal Mt. Eventually the trail reveals a “stair-step” climb up the rocks and onto the table-top mesa.

There is something about the Chapel of the Holy Cross that moves me. Perhaps it is the simplicity of the design. One room, a window, hundreds of little red candles. The location is atop a hill where bell rock, courthouse butte, and all of Sedona lay spread out before you. From the outside the chapel nearly blends into the scenery, it’s the same vermillion color as the red rocks around it…and it’s that subtlety that makes me stop for a moment and breathe. Sedona is like that. All of this natural beauty makes you remember how tiny all of our problems are in the face of such grandeur. I have lived here 5 years and it is always the same.

Sugary Sweet View of Sedona

Why hadn’t I done this hike before? I’ve lived here all of these years and never hiked Sugerloaf. This hike is smack dab in the middle of Sedona. If you aren’t sure where it is the trail head could be pretty easy to overlook. It’s located in a residential neighborhood. I drove past the entrance the first time and had to turn around in someone’s driveway.
