Sedona experiences a stealthy, albeit radiant, autumn. It doesn’t show up where you’d expect it, on high slopes. The rocks don’t blush any redder in fall. Autumn erupts in drainages and canyon bottoms. The Huckaby plunges you right into the heart of this riparian riot.
From the Schnebly Hill Trailhead, the trail drops in and out of Bear Wallow Wash. You emerge along an elevated ridge overlooking the multihued ribbon of Oak Creek, graced by cottonwood, velvet ash, Arizona sycamore, box elder and willow. The trail descends to Oak Creek, where sumac and a viny tangle of canyon grape and Virginia creeper enhance the kaleidoscopic effect.
After two creek crossings, the path switchbacks up the bank beneath the impressive span of Midgely Bridge.
Getting there: From central Phoenix, take Interstate 17 north to Exit 298, then Arizona 179 north into Sedona. Turn right onto Schnebly Hill Road (before the bridge over Oak Creek) and drive 0.8 mile to a signed parking area.
